Train Services Cancelled Between Whitby and Middlesbrough Due to Broken Rail

Whitby train services were halted earlier after the discovery of a broken rail between Middlesbrough and Whitby.

The disruption, which has led to cancellations for services operating to and from these stations, is expected to continue until 14:30 today, 1st July.

Earlier a spokesperson for Northern stated that "Train services are unable to run between Middlesbrough and Nunthorpe/Whitby (in both directions)". Network Rail personnel are understood to have been due on site at 11:30 to address the issue.

In an update just after 1pm Network Rail said:

"Following a broken rail between Middlesbrough and Whitby all lines have now reopened.

Train services running to and from these stations are returning to normal but some services may still be cancelled or delayed.

Disruption is expected until 14:30 01/07."

For ongoing updates, customers at station platforms are advised to listen for announcements or consult Customer Information Screens. Live real-time journey updates can also be found online at https://journeycheck.com/northern or by messaging Northern on X (formerly Twitter) via @northernassist. Passengers wishing to re-plan their journeys can visit https://nationalrail.co.uk

Northern has also reminded passengers that if their journey has been delayed by 15 minutes or more, they should retain their tickets to claim compensation by visiting https://northernrailway.co.uk/delayrepay
