TGJones has confirmed it will permanently close its Scarborough town centre store in January 2027, resulting in the loss of the town's main Post Office branch.
Scarborough's TGJones is set to close permanently alongside the loss of the town’s main post office, the company has confirmed.
TGJones will permanently shut its shop in Scarborough town centre as part of a wider restructuring programme which recently saw a branch closure in the centre of York.
The Post Office, located inside the store at 106-107 Westborough, will also close a couple of weeks before the retailer.
The store, previously known as WH Smith, is expected to close on Saturday, January 23, 2027, following a closing down sale.
A spokesperson for TGJones acknowledged the announcement would be “disappointing” for staff and customers and said it was focused on “supporting those affected”.
TG Jones is closing dozens of stores across the country “to secure the long-term future” of the company, as part of the implementation of a court-approved restructuring plan.
A spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS):
As we work to secure the long-term future of TGJones, we have confirmed that our Scarborough shop will close.
We know this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers and the local community.
Our focus now is on supporting those affected and continuing to serve customers throughout the closure period.
We would like to thank all of our colleagues for their commitment and the contribution they have made to TGJones.
The Post Office has identified the Falsgrave Road branch, around 0.7 miles away, and the Newlands Park branch, around 1.4 miles away, as alternative locations while it seeks a permanent replacement.
According to the Post Office, a similar range of services will be available at Falsgrave Road, while Newlands Park does not offer Passport Check and Send services.
The Post Office said in a recent letter:
The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in the area is important to us, and we are working hard to find a location nearby to continue offering Post Office services to the local community in Scarborough.
Customers and local residents can submit comments on the closure plans by emailing comments@postoffice.co.uk, visiting postofficeviews.co.uk, calling 03452 66 01 15, or writing to FREEPOST Your Comments.
The Post Office said comments would remain confidential unless respondents specifically requested otherwise.
