Government policies affecting tourism, media, and grassroots sports will face direct scrutiny from a Yorkshire Coast representative following a key parliamentary appointment.
Scarborough and Whitby's Member of Parliament, Alison Hume, has been elected to the influential Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.
Crucial inquiries will be carried out by the parliamentary body, which is tasked with examining evidence and making recommendations that help shape national legislation. The committee plays a vital role in holding the government to account across its entire brief.
Extensive knowledge and professional experience will be brought to the scrutiny process by the newly elected committee member. Prior to entering the House of Commons in 2024, the local representative built a career as a journalist, television producer, and screenwriter, achieving recognition with awards from BAFTA and the Royal Television Society.
Advocacy for the creative and sporting sectors has been a focus for the MP since her election. Stronger copyright protections and expanded opportunities for young people in the creative industries have been championed alongside campaigns to improve access to grassroots sports for women and girls.
The coastal visitor economy will also benefit from direct representation on the committee. Close working relationships have already been established between the MP and key stakeholders from the Scarborough and Whitby tourism sector, an area which falls directly under the committee’s official brief.
The appointment reflects a growing parliamentary profile on issues affecting these vital community sectors.
Alison Hume said:
"I'm incredibly proud to have been elected to the DCMS Select Committee."
"As a former journalist, producer and screenwriter, I know just how important our creative industries, media and grassroots sport are to communities across the country."
"Tourism is also vitally important and that’s something which is also a key consideration for the committee."
"This is a real opportunity to be a strong voice for creators, broadcasters, sports clubs and those working within tourism from communities like Scarborough and Whitby."
The new parliamentary role will allow for further action on issues impacting freelance workers, coastal businesses, and sporting organisations.
Alison Hume added:
"From tackling copyright infringement which hits freelancers and others hard, helping tourism, to opening up more opportunities for women and girls in sport, I'm determined to make a positive difference."
