Scarborough residents can enjoy a free evening light display at Peasholm Park this week after organisers salvaged artworks from a weekend event cancelled due to severe gales.
Handmade lanterns and illuminations will light up a Scarborough park this week after organisers salvaged artworks from a cancelled weekend event.
Families can view the free 'Art in the Park' display at Peasholm Park every evening until Saturday, 28 November.
The outdoor installations were originally created for the highly anticipated Moonlight on the Lake event, which was cancelled on Friday and Saturday as Storm Boelo battered the Yorkshire Coast with severe gales.
The creative team from Animated Objects Theatre Company worked through the weekend storms to rescue the large-scale pieces, which celebrate Scarborough's four-hundredth anniversary as England's first seaside spa town.
Visitors can view the illuminated artworks from the perimeter path across the lake until 10:30 pm each evening.
The central island remains closed to the public, as organisers designed the lanterns to be viewed from across the water to maximise their reflections.
A spokesperson for Animated Objects Theatre Company said:
"We are thrilled to announce that after a very busy weekend with our team working in extremely challenging conditions following the weekend's storms we have some good news to bring you for half term and beyond.
Thanks to support from Arts Council England and North Yorkshire Council you will be able to discover a short series of our beautiful large scale hand made lanterns and illuminations on display in Peasholm Park, inspired by Scarborough's 400th anniversary as England's first seaside spa town.
These pieces will be illuminated every evening until Saturday 28th November, and the park will be open for you to wander through at your own pace, free of charge under the title 'Art in the Park'."
Thousands of ticket holders for the original Moonlight on the Lake attraction missed out when wind gusts of up to 80 mph forced North Yorkshire Council to pull the plug on safety grounds.
The severe conditions worsened throughout Saturday and persisted into Sunday, with heavy rain combining with the strong winds to make outdoor coastal events impossible to run safely.
The new temporary exhibition removes the need for advance booking, allowing families to explore the park at their own pace.
Organisers confirmed the artworks also look beautiful during daylight hours, though they noted that evening visitors will not have access to public toilet facilities in the park.
The theatre company urged visitors to respect personal space and take care when using the paths alongside the lake.
A spokesperson for the theatre company added:
"You do not need a ticket to visit the park - these are public artworks designed to be viewed at your own pace either by day or night, and we have extended their stay to allow everyone time and space to see them. Please respect other's personal space and take care when using the paths alongside the lake.
Look out in the coming weeks for more of our work on exhibition at different locations across Scarborough and follow us for updates.
Huge thanks to all of our hard working team and volunteers; our youth skills group; Lawrence and the technical team Scarborough Spa and the events & parks teams from North Yorkshire Council.
It's always a huge collaborative effort to create outdoor artworks, and we appreciate the dedication and hard work everyone put in to helping put this together for visitors to enjoy."
The initial cancellation followed warnings from the Met Office regarding severe weather across northern parts of the UK.
Event organisers previously stated they were absolutely devastated after months of hard work preparing the lanterns, but completely supported the council's decision to prioritise public safety.
Ticket holders for the cancelled Moonlight on the Lake event will receive automatic refunds from North Yorkshire Council within ten days.
