Police are investigating the fourth sudden death on the Yorkshire Coast this week.
Emergency services were called to Sandsend, near Whitby, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:01 AM, following reports of a woman's body discovered below the cliffs behind the main car park. A coordinated response included teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat, and fire service.
The woman's body was recovered at 12:55 PM, and the scene was reopened at 2:15 PM after extensive inquiries were conducted. Authorities have confirmed that the deceased is a local woman in her 50s.
In a statement, North Yorkshire Police expressed their condolences, stating, "Officers are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time." They also clarified that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Police are actively seeking witnesses or anyone with information that could assist with the investigation. They have urged the public to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 12250143585.
Police say that this incident is not connected to the recent sudden deaths of a man and a woman below Whitby Abbey on July 30, 2025, or another woman found in the same area on July 31, 2025. Authorities have emphasised this point to alleviate any public concern regarding the circumstances surrounding these events.
