Snow Causing Travel Issues & Closing Schools

Roads were described as treacherous this morning on the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds especially, and some schools have closed for the day.

Several inches of snow fell on the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds overnight and winds have been drifting the snow in places.

The A171 was reported to have difficult driving conditions between Whitby and Scarborough on Friday morning.

The A169 was said to be "slow going" and had snow covering the road at the Hole Of Horcum with winds blowing snow across the road across many moorland routes.

The 165 Reighton to Bridlington has seen snow blowing across the road.

The A614 Bridlington to Driffield road has been slow in many places and the A166 west of Driffield was described as "treacherous".

There are a number of schools in the area confirmed as closed including St. Hedda's in Eagton Bridge, Lealholm, Castleton, Glaisdale and Oakridge. The full list of school closures, regularly updated, is here.

Scarborough Borough Council say some bin collections will be affected by the poor conditions, the council says:

"Refuse/recycling collections in northern rural areas of the borough such as Castleton, Roxby, Boggle Hole and Stoops Brow may not take place today due to the wintry conditions on high ground.

Please leave your bin out and we'll get to it as soon as we can. Thank you."

Last night, North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue tweeted to say there were a number of cars being stranded on routes in the area.

Trains seem unaffected so far this morning.

The main band of rain, sleet and snow is sinking south-east out of the area now, to be followed by snow showers in a cold northerly wind. It looks set to stay cold until Sunday when milder air arrives, bringing with it wind and rain.

There is the likelihood of it turning colder again early next week.
