Concerns have been raised over plans which would see a popular East Yorkshire market unable to continue in its current form.
A planning application has now been submitted to East Riding Of Yorkshire Council which, if approved, would mean Skirlington Market would “cease”.
Plans have been put forward by the owners of the Skirlington Coast holiday park in which they “propose to invest significant funds into upgrading all aspects” of the site. The application seeks to add new facilities including crazy golf and playing courts.
The plans state that, despite the holiday park’s scale, “its communal facilities are relatively small, having undergone minimal recent investment”. They add: “As a result, many of these amenities are outdated and no longer meet the expectations of modern visitors.”
The plans explain that Skirlington Market, which is located on the site, would “cease with the proposed development.” In explaining the rationale behind this move, plans state: “The market continuing to function in the way it does currently is not in alignment with the vision for the future of the wider site as a viable business.
“It generates significant noise and disturbance over a short period of time during each week, disrupting the enjoyment of this prime coastal location, where the sounds of the sea are the dominant feature.”
Since plans emerged there has been significant objection from supporters of the market. A spokesperson from the market has said they have received more than 12,000 signatures on a petition aiming to save the market which they say is a “vital tourist attraction”.
The spokesperson added:
“The thing that sums up our situation right now is the contrast between where we stand nationally and what is happening locally. We are currently in the top 30 for Britain’s Favourite Market, which is a national award run by NABMA, the National Association of British Market Authorities.
“There are hundreds of markets across the UK that can enter, so being in the top 30 is a huge achievement. It is all public voting and people can vote every day until 12 December, then it goes to a judging panel.
“So while we are being recognised nationally and are in the running for a major award, we are at the same time facing the threat of closure. The planning application from the site owners is now live.
“If it is approved, the market will not survive in its current form. That is the reality we are dealing with.”
A number of objections have been submitted onto council’s planning portal. One, from a trader at the market, says:
“This will have a great impact to my income, affecting my family and home. My business means the world to me. All the traders rely on this market for income and even more now that times are so hard with the rising costs of household bills.”
Meanwhile, planning statements claim: “There’s nothing to suggest that some or all of the indoor operations would not be more than capable of relocating to Hornsea Village, should commercial terms be reached regarding letting of individual stalls.” The spokesperson from the market refutes this, saying the site mooted for the relocation “is half the size we need now with nowhere near enough parking and Hornsea’s roads could not cope with the level of traffic. It would not work in practice. It is not a like for like alternative for relocation.”
Supporters of the MArket have launched a peition which they hope to submit to local MP Charlie Dewhirst on December 14th, they say:
"Closing Skirlington Market and Carboot would devastate livelihoods, harm East Yorkshire’s tourism economy and take away part of what makes our area special. It would be like taking the seafront away from Bridlington."
