Schools Close As Yorkshire Coast Weather Warning Extended

A number of schools on the Yorkshire Coast have taken the decision to remain closed on Tuesday as a second day of ice and snow is predicted.

Residents and travellers along the Yorkshire Coast are being urged to prepare for continued disruption as a Met Office yellow warning for snow and ice remains in place until 11:00 am tomorrow, Tuesday 6 January. The warning, which covers the coast and the North York Moors, follows a period of wintry weather that has already seen gritters deployed to maintain essential routes.

The Met Office has indicated that scattered snow showers would continue to move inland from the North Sea throughout Monday, potentially bringing fresh accumulations of 5–8 cm in some parts of North and East Yorkshire. Forecasters have also warned that coastal areas may face additional hazards, including gusty winds and the possibility of lightning.

While the snow showers are expected to become more isolated by Monday evening, the risk to the public will shift towards widespread ice. As temperatures drop below freezing, untreated surfaces, including pavements and cycle paths, are likely to become treacherous. The Met Office cautions that this could lead to injuries from slips and falls, as well as longer journey times for those using road, bus, and rail services.

A number of Schools in Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington have already taken the decision not to open on Tuesday, you can see an up to date list of closures at https://www.thisisthecoast.co.uk/local-info/school-closures/

In response to the freezing conditions, gritting crews in North Yorkshire have been working to clear the roads. However, officials remind drivers that salt is not a magic solution saying "Enough traffic needs to drive over a gritted road to grind the salt in and activate it," noting that the melting process only begins once this occurs. Furthermore, any fresh snow falling will land directly on top of the treated surface.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has also voiced concerns as many people return to work following the festive break. Rebecca Guy, Senior Policy Manager at RoSPA, emphasised the need for caution:

"With many people heading back to work this week, it’s vital to plan ahead and drive cautiously. Winter weather demands extra care".

RoSPA warns that braking distances can be up to ten times longer on icy roads and advises motorists to carry an emergency kit containing warm clothing, food, water, and a charged mobile phone.

To stay safe during the next 24 hours, the Met Office and RoSPA recommend the following:

  • Plan journeys ahead of time, allowing at least five minutes of extra time to avoid rushing, which reduces the risk of accidents and falls.
  • Check vehicle essentials, ensuring all snow is cleared from windscreens and the car is thoroughly de-iced before setting off.
  • Stick to main roads when walking or cycling, as these are more likely to have been treated and are generally less slippery than side streets.

As the region braces for a freezing night, the Met Office advises residents to remain vigilant, as weather warnings can change quickly. Those in rural communities are particularly encouraged to prepare for the potential of being temporarily cut off or experiencing power outages.

Navigating these icy conditions is much like walking on a floor covered in glass marbles; even with the best preparation, every movement requires extra deliberation and balance to ensure a safe arrival.
