Plans are to be put together to celebrate Scarborough's 400th birthday in 2026.
North Yorkshire Council has allocated £10,500 to start a project to look at what could be done to the historic Spa pump to mark the event.
Local Councillor Rich Maw thinks the spa should be the focus of the celebrations.
The ambitious scheme could see Scarborough's historic spa pump room revealed to the public as part the resorts 400th birthday celebrations.
Councillor Maw thinks the town should make the most of the celebration.
The money will be used to undertake feasibility and scoping activity around the original Scarborough Spa Pump to support the development of plans ahead of the 2026 anniversary of Scarborough becoming a spa town. The Scarborough Spa plan will be part of a wider programme of activity commemorating this milestone for Scarborough.
The ‘Scarborough 400’ steering group are working on a series of events for 2026, incorporating Scarborough Fair, public art, outdoor health and active wellbeing pursuits, heritage and arts trails. As part of the project a physical legacy is proposed to develop interpretation of the spa pump and its history, OFFICIAL which will continue to feed into the promotion of Scarborough as a destination for culture & wellbeing.
Councillor David Jeffels thinks the £10,500 of funding will help to kick start the planning for the project.
It's expected that the initial work will involve obtaining a structural engineer assessment of the pump, the removal of water ingress to the pump location, 3D scanning of the pump for use in interpretation/immersive VR works and a feasibility study assessing interpretation options located at the Spa building.
