After hitting their fundraising target, students from Scarborough UTC will be travelling to the world finals in Saudi Arabia this month.
Engineering Students at Scarborough UTC have been fundraising since March to raise funds for their attempt to win the F1 in Schools world championship which take place later this month in Saudi Arabia.
The Unity Racing team qualified for the event after coming second in the UK finals in March.
The racing team say:
"We have finally raised our goal of £32000 and even surpassed the goal to raise £34000!
This was possible through a combination of partnerships, sponsors and various fundraising events. With this surplus in our budget, we formed the unity foundation.
Through this we are grateful to say we are going to help to fund future f1 in schools teams projects in the Scarborough UTC
This means that we have now secured our place in competing at the Aramco F1 In schools world finals, starting on the 22nd of this month."
The UTC's Unity Racing Team design, build, test and race a 1/20th scale Formula One car. The competition is designed to mimic working for an actual f1 team. This is achieved through being assessed on the design process and how you have used industry-standard software and knowledge to develop the car. The competition is multidisciplinary meaning that there are several aspects to the competition including marketing and project management portfolios along with verbal presentations and pit displays which are all graded alongside the engineering.
All of the judges at the world finals will be industry professionals or successful alumni of the competition for example previous world champions. Through F1 in schools, many successful alumni have gone on to work in the industry of motorsport directly impacting their lives and the lives of others.
The World Finals take place over 10 days in Saudi Arabia this November and the team needed to raise £30k to fund flights, hotels, entrance fees food, transport, team kit and car manufacture.
At the world finals, they will be one of around 70 teams competing from countries all around the globe.
UTC F1 in Schools Co-ordinator, Rob Rob Shepherd, says the team has a strong track record.
