Scarborough Rugby Club Proposes Major ‘Centenary Transformation’

Wednesday, 5 November 2025 18:09

By Anttoni James Numminen, Local Democracy Reporter

Scarborough Rugby Union FC has submitted plans for a major ‘centenary transformation’ with upgraded pitches and padel courts.

Scarborough RUFC is hoping to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year with a major redevelopment, including upgrading the existing grass pitch to 3G/4G pitch, building a new spectator stand, constructing new padel courts, and creating an extension to the clubhouse building.

Scarborough RUFC moved to its current site at Scalby Road, located 3km north-west of Scarborough town centre, in 2009.

Other proposed works at the club include an external terraced area, infill of a WC extension, and indoor rugby 5s courts.

“This will allow the club to get the best value for its investment and future-proof the site, without restricting the need for further growth, and to safeguard the viability of this community asset,” submitted plans state.

Scarborough RUFC has been in existence for almost 100 years following a meeting of “like-minded rugby enthusiasts” at Scarborough’s Pavilion Hotel in 1926.

It has the UK’s largest amateur clubhouse, set within a 32-acre site with multiple playing and training pitches.

“Due to a considerable growth of the club over recent years, Scarborough RUFC has explored options for the extension and remodelling of their clubhouse and sports facilities to accommodate this expansion,” according to the scheme.

The club has aspirations for further expansion during its centenary year and the development of the second team pitch to incorporate covered spectator seating and a 3G / 4G playing surface “will ensure that the spectators can enjoy the game in all weathers while the pitch will remain well drained for play”.

Alterations to the clubhouse aim to offer additional accessible toilet facilities and the new padel courts would allow the club to follow its “aspirations for continued expansion”.

“An external terrace at first-floor level to give additional seating for the hospitality suites overlooking the first team pitch is also proposed,” the plan states.

North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application, which is currently open to representations from members of the public.
