Scarborough received over a third of the funding allocated by a North Yorkshire wide scheme to support community groups.
The Stronger Communities Programme has awarded £130,000 in Inspire grants over the last year with £47,000 of that going to Scarborough based projects.
Karen Atkinson is from North Yorkshire Council's localities team, she says there are many groups in the Scarborough area that have benefitted from the scheme.
Scarborough has received over a third of North Yorkshire's Inspire grants over the last 12 months.
Resident groups or community organisations can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to help fund local projects and events.
The Stronger Community Inspire Fund is primarily about supporting local social action and aims to encourage people to get involved in their local community by offering small grants to help establish new services, events or activities that:
- increase social interaction
- encourage neighbourliness
- improve the wellbeing of individuals and communities
The grant may be used to:
- fund events or activities
- help with start-up costs for new projects or services
- purchase small items of equipment
Karen Atkinson says the money has gone to 48 different projects in the local area.
North Yorkshire Council says that the investment has allowed communities and small grass roots groups and organisations to develop locally based projects and activities, promoting social action, volunteering, and supporting health and wellbeing.
