A ‘world-famous’ Scarborough fish and chip shop’s application to sell alcohol and play music is to be decided by councillors following local concerns.
The award-winning Tunny Club at East Sandgate in Scarborough’s South Bay is seeking permission to sell alcohol from 10am to 10pm and play live and recorded music seven days a week.
However, following local concerns and objections to the plan, a council licensing sub-committee will meet to decide on the proposal.
A local resident has said that approving the licence would make it
“impossible to open our windows in summer without having our home filled with unwanted noise”.
“We live behind the Tunny Club and the noise of films, music, and people would be very disruptive for us,”
In a letter sent to the council, the neighbour noted that the area around the Tunny Club is “overwhelmingly residential” and “the building which directly adjoins the Tunny Club offers social housing for elderly and vulnerable people”.
The latter adds:
“The quality of all our lives would be seriously affected by noise and disruption if this application is approved.
“The old town and Scarborough seafront are already well provided with many licensed premises, including restaurants, and places of entertainment, all within easy reach of the Tunny Club – there is no need for others.”
If Nicholas Hartley’s licence application is approved, the exhibition of films would also be permitted from Monday to Sunday, as would playing live and recorded music.
The fish and chips establishment has received praise for the quality and freshness of its food in national and regional publications and newspapers, including The Times.
A meeting of the council’s licensing sub-committee will be held at the Council Chamber, Ryedale House, Malton, on Tuesday, January 20, to decide the application.
The committee can approve the licence as requested, approve it with additional conditions, or reject the whole or part of the application.
