Scarborough Streets gets underway this week amid uncertainty around the future funding model for the Scarborough Fair initiative.
Scarborough Streets Festival will get underway on Friday
The three day festival of outdoor events and performances is part of this Year's Scarborough Fair.
It's the third year that the town has hosted the event and it's the final edition to be supported by funding from the Government’s Towns Fund programme.
The Scarborough Fair project is funded in part by £1.2 million from the Government’s Towns Fund programme, which has been used to help to organise 15 festivals over the last
three years. The Fair is a project of North Yorkshire Council, working in partnership with the public and private sectors and initiated following extensive consultation with local residents, businesses and community organisations.
Festival Director - Julian Caddy - says work is already underway to ensure the fair can continue in future years.
"I really hope we can make it go forward. We have a meeting with fellow, colleagues within the council to see what we can do for the future of the Scarborough Fair in terms of funding, what the structure of the organization will be, whether it's part of the council, whether it's independent. But one thing we really shouldn't do is let go of it.
I think it's really vital that we have this platform and this platform should be owned by the people of Scarborough.
It shouldn't be something that's highfalutin and On high and preaching down on people. It needs to be something that people feel that they have ownership of. Then it will be relevant and it will evolve.
And I think that's the vital thing, is that it stays alive and it is an embodiment of the people who live here."
Julian Caddy is keen that the fair should continue beyond it's initial three year funding allocation which ends this year, he feels that the Fair is helping to support the local economy.
"What we want to do is to have a vibrant, creative, and visitor economy, which means that the local businesses, independent businesses, will flourish.
Young people won't feel they have to leave. 'Cause there are jobs for people. So people could be working in stage management or they might be working as artists or designers.
And you've got so many college students, you've got school students, you've got. University students who are coming here, if they know they can get and have a reliable and sustainable career working in what they enjoy doing then we should be doing more and more of it."
The inclusive community event takes place in Scarborough Town Centre over the week of Friday 30 May to Sunday 1 June (11am – 4pm) and will include a variety of free performances and activities. Organisers say the festival aims to inspire, celebrate and showcase local creativity, but it will also feature national and international artists, too. Activities will be taking place on Westborough, Aberdeen Walk, North Street and Crescent Gardens.
