Scarborough Darts Players Push Professionals In UK Open

Scarborough's Sam Spivey came agonisingly close to taking on the best 32 darts players in the world, at the sport's UK Open.

Battling through to the third stage of the competition's opening round, in Minehead, on Friday, he was edged out 6-5 by Alexander Merks of the Netherlands, ranked 116 in the world.

A win would have taken him through to the evening round where the top 32 in the PDC enter the competition.

Spivey had beaten Kyle Gilding and the world's number 70, Max Hopps, of Germany to reach that stage.

Another Scarborough player, Graham Usher lost to Cristo Reyes, of Spain, ranked 98.
