Scarborough College Pupils Back after Lockdown

It was an emotional and special day for all year groups at Scarborough College today as pupils returned to school after, in some cases, being absent from school for over half a year.

There were excited but also some nervous faces from Little Owls nursery children, and their mums and dads, to the students in the Sixth Form and the pupils starting ‘big school’ in Year 7.  It wasn’t just parents and children who were nervous, however, after months of planning, it was a very special back-to-school for all staff as well.

After months of lockdown learning and online lessons, today saw all the Scardeburgians return to school for lessons in classroom, lunch in the dining room, games and Yorkshire Grit.  And while many pupils did incredibly well during their time away from school, nothing beats face-to-face time with the teacher and friends from school.

For the time being, the College will look a little different however.  Pupils are taught in Year Group bubbles and remain in the classrooms while the teachers move around.  Outside the classrooms, pupils wear masks at all times and those pupils who have games or Yorkshire Grit go to school in their P.E. kit instead of their school uniform.

Mr Guy Emmett, Headmaster of Scarborough College, commented:

“Noise has returned to the College. It has been too quiet for too long!  We have the missed the children and they have clearly missed each other.  We all had a mixture of emotions as the first child arrived at school this morning and today is a happy day.  My own daughter had her first day in Reception Class and to see her with her friends at school means the world to me as a Dad.”
