A 24-hour climbing challenge at Street Rocks, Coast and Vale Community Action’s (CaVCA) independent climbing centre in Scarborough, has exceeded all expectations — both on the wall and in fundraising.
Over the course of the event, 20 climbers took on a sponsored “Climbathon” aiming to collectively scale the distance around the moon.
By the end of the challenge, they had achieved an extraordinary 30,833 metres — equivalent to 2.8 times around the moon’s circumference.
The event was organised to raise funds for the installation of a Moonboard, a globally recognised training wall that connects climbers around the world through shared routes and online challenges. The Street Rocks team launched a Crowdfunder campaign with a target of £10,000 — a goal that was spectacularly surpassed thanks to overwhelming community support.
Mel Bonney, CaVCA’s CEO and local climber said:
“We’ve been absolutely inspired by the response, Our climbing community came together with such energy and enthusiasm. The funds raised will allow us to install a world-class training wall right here in Scarborough, giving local climbers access to the global Moonboard network and helping us nurture talent on the coast.”
The day also saw a Kids’ Climbathon, where young climbers were challenged to “climb the height of a rocket to the moon.” Many exceeded expectations, scaling several “rockets” worth of height with enthusiasm and determination.
The introduction of the Moonboard will be a major step forward for Street Rocks. It will enhance the quality of training available locally, attract new climbers, and provide opportunities for the community to engage with the international climbing scene.
“Street Rocks has always been about accessibility and community,” Mel Bonney added. “This project represents a milestone in our ongoing ambition to grow climbing on the coast and to support people in developing their skills, confidence, and connection with the outdoors.”
