Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguards are preparing to resume their vital beach patrols at Redcar and Saltburn ahead of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.
Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguards will soon return to Redcar and Saltburn beaches to offer a reassuring presence for visitors during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.
Starting on Saturday the 23rd of May, Saltburn beach will be patrolled by the lifesaving charity over the summer season, with teams on duty between 10am and 6pm daily.
Meanwhile, Redcar beach will also see Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguards return between 10am and 6pm each day over the May half-term, which runs from the 23rd to the 31st of May 2026.
Following the half-term break, from the first weekend in June, the charity will monitor Redcar beach between 10am and 6pm on weekends only. This weekend service will continue until the 18th of July, at which point the beach patrol will expand to a full daily service for the peak summer weeks.
The charity has confirmed that beach patrols at both Redcar and Saltburn will conclude for the year on Sunday the 6th of September.
The lifeguarding team operating across the North and East have been working hard to complete vital training ahead of the season. The charity says the team are looking forward to returning to the beaches on a full-time basis.
Because the charity's lifeguards need to be physically on the beach during patrolled hours, ready to respond to emergencies and prevent accidents, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution cannot rely solely on volunteers to provide this cover seven days a week. As a result, local authorities part-fund the charity's costs, which helps to meet the cost of the lifeguard wages.
The return of the patrols marks a special milestone, as throughout 2026, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is celebrating the twenty-five-year anniversary of its lifeguarding service.
Andrew Jamieson, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution Lead Lifeguard Supervisor, said:
"We always advise people to visit a lifeguarded beach and to swim between the red and yellow flags. This year sees the RNLI lifeguard service welcome in its 25-year anniversary, and we are thrilled to start our patrols at Redcar and Saltburn while this important milestone is celebrated. It is great to see visitors enjoying the coast with the extra peace of mind of knowing that we are there should they need us."
Councillor Carrie Richardson, Deputy Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and cabinet member for Climate and Culture, said:
"The RNLI are true heroes. They're out there in all conditions to keep people safe, and we're incredibly grateful for everything they do on our coastline. We're beyond proud to support their work here in Redcar and Cleveland."
Councillor Carrie Richardson added:
"Having RNLI lifeguards back on our beaches gives real peace of mind to residents and visitors alike. We'd encourage everyone to enjoy the coast safely this summer and listen to the lifeguards' advice while they're on patrol."
Ahead of the summer season, the lifesaving charity has issued essential safety advice for those planning to visit the coast.
Visitors are urged to always choose a lifeguarded beach and to ensure they swim between the red and yellow flags. Families are advised to keep a close eye on their relatives both on the beach and in the water, and to ensure that family members are never allowed to swim alone.
Furthermore, the charity reminds the public that if they fall into the water unexpectedly, they should remember the 'Float To Live' advice to help them survive in an emergency.
