North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has recorded a dramatic increase in home fire safety visits, smashing ambitious targets to help protect local communities.
Residents across the region are benefiting from a heightened focus on domestic hazard prevention, as the latest figures reveal a substantial rise in household safety checks conducted by the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Over the past twenty-four months, the emergency service has significantly accelerated its approach to community protection. Recent data illustrates a remarkable upward trajectory in the volume of properties assessed for fire risks, showcasing a growing dedication to stopping emergencies before they even occur.
The organisation initially completed just over three thousand of these preventative checks two years prior. Following a noticeable enhancement in performance during the subsequent twelve months, leadership established a demanding goal to reach five and a half thousand assessments for the current financial period.
Frontline responders and dedicated staff ultimately surpassed this objective by a considerable margin, executing more than six thousand three hundred individual property visits. This surge represents a massive leap in operational output, heavily driven by the daily efforts of regular station crews alongside specialised prevention workers.
A major portion of this success is directly attributed to the strategic backing given to the prevention department. The positive outcomes demonstrate that recent funding and resource allocation are yielding tangible results for public welfare. Furthermore, the statistics highlight that standard operational teams carried out the vast majority of these safety engagements, reflecting a major boost in their daily efficiency and a strong dedication to delivering public value.
Ben Illsley, Director of Operational Support and Assurance, said:
"Two years ago, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service delivered 3,167 home fire safety visits. We saw year-on-year significant improvement last year, and we set an ambitious target as an organisation to improve that further to 5,500 this financial year. We've exceeded that target and delivered 6,353 home fire safety visits. So it's a year-on-year improvement of 42% and also 65% versus the year before as well.
That's a fantastic achievement for us as an organisation.
A lot of the investment that went into the prevention team in two years is clearly working now and showing great fruits of the labour that works in that team as well.
But 4,959 of the home fire safety visits last year were delivered by our operational crews. That is a 57% increase of productivity of our operational crews, providing value for money and commitment to keeping their community safe."
The cultural shift towards proactive hazard management extends to stations along the Yorkshire Coast. During a recent engagement in Scarborough, senior officials noted that frontline personnel view these preventative duties as a core component of their daily routine, rather than an additional administrative burden.
The ongoing commitment to expanding these protective measures ensures that more households receive vital advice on smoke alarms, escape routes, and everyday hazard reduction, ultimately contributing to a much safer environment across the county.
Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor of York and North Yorkshire Policing, Fire and Crime, said:
"I was in Scarborough a couple of weeks ago and certainly a couple of the firefighters I spoke to were saying that this kind of work is now just embedded in everything that they do. Which is really good to hear, I didn't ask the question, they just proactively told me that the kind of prevention stuff is completely embedded in everything that they're doing. Fantastic to see that those home fire safety visits are happening."
