A fundraising campaign that aimed to raise just a hundred pounds to support local farmers helping fight the moorland fires, has now raised over £73,000
Amy Cockrem launched the just giving page thinking it might help feed some of the farmers while they worked.
Now she's got the NFU involved to help distribute the money after the public took the total to 73 thousand pounds.
"I set up a JustGiving Page originally for a hundred pound, just to go out there and try and help buy food and drink.
And now I've just checked it's got to 70,000 which is amazing, which is gonna go along way to support our farmers and go to charities.
The NFU is involved now that's just to discuss what the money will be spent on and where it'll be going. We definitely needed the, the NFU involved now. It's got too big to, uh, control by myself. They have decided that maybe some tractor tires there's a lot of broken machinery and equipment to the farmer's tractors oil filters and all such as that."
Amy says many farmers have suffered damage to their equipment and land as a result of both the fire and their efforts to tackle the blaze.
"There's been a lot of damage while they've been out there fighting the fire.
A wagon load of hay got delivered a couple of day days ago to a local farmer who has lost grazing due to the fire.
It's devastating. I was up on the moors the other night, and now the smoke's gone down and you get to see the sheer scale of, what the fire's damaged, it's heartbreaking.
And I think a lot of people are realizing that the amount of birds that must have been killed like grouse and partridges and pheasants, it's got wrenching really to think that them poor little things aren't being able to escape the fire.
Yeah it's heartbreaking."
Amy is hoping that once the fire is fully out there will be an opportunity for the public to organise a show of support for the farmers efforts.
"Some sort of maybe tractor run get the fire crew and everyone involved.
Something similar to like we did in COVID to the NHS, like clap for them.
I think the guys out there maybe wanna by what I'm hearing back is they wanna thank the community as well, so not just for us to sort of clap them guys, they can say thank you as well.
So yeah, it's something I'm thinking of planning in the near future. "

Yesterday the work of the farmers was commended in the House of Commons by Scarborough and Whitby MP, Alison Hume, and Bridlington MP, Charlie Dewhirst.
