Increasing rates of Coastal erosion have lead East Riding Council to look at ways of moving a car park.
The facility at Mappleton has already lost it's toilet block to erosion.
Coastal Change Manager - Richard Jackson - says they are now looking at relocating the entire facility.
The plans to relocate the car park because have been welcomed by local councillors.
Councillor Paul Hopton says the facility is well used and he's pleased it's being moved.
Erosion rates in Mappleton have accelerated, leading to the loss of the toilet block in September 2024. The toilet block has been demolished and temporary facilities are currently in place.
The need for relocation is driven by the significant erosion losses recorded between August 2023 and May 2024.
These losses have been slightly above average rates, with some areas experiencing significant losses, including the area south of Hornsea where Mappleton is located.
A high-level options appraisal for the relocation has been completed, and work is underway to identify and prioritize potential sites for the new facilities.
The Changing Coasts East Riding (CCER) team will be engaging with the Parish Council, residents, and visitors to determine their priorities and preferences for the new car park and community/classroom space.
The CCER project is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and aims to collaborate with coastal communities to respond to and plan for the impacts of coastal erosion.
