The majority of services at Malton Hospital, including the Urgent Treatment Centre and routine blood tests, have officially reopened following a fire that prompted a full evacuation last week.
The majority of services at Malton Hospital have resumed normal operations following a recent fire that forced a temporary closure of the main site and the evacuation of patients and staff.
Health officials have confirmed that as of Monday, the 13th of July, the main hospital building is back up and running. This includes the resumption of routine services such as blood taking, which had previously been redirected to alternative sites across the region.
A spokesperson for the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust issued an update on social media to confirm the reopening.
The spokesperson said:
"We're pleased to confirm that, from today, Monday 13 July, the majority of services at Malton Hospital will be operating as normal. If you have an appointment, please attend as planned unless you have been contacted directly and advised otherwise. Our Urgent Treatment Centre is now also open, as well as blood taking services. Thank you to our colleagues, partner organisations, emergency services and the local community for your incredible support over the past few days."
The full reopening comes after the Malton Urgent Treatment Centre initially reopened its doors to the public on Friday, the 10th of July. At that time, the main building at Malton Hospital remained temporarily closed as recovery and restoration efforts continued.
During the temporary closure of the main hospital over the weekend, several routine services were severely impacted. Patients requiring blood tests were redirected to alternative locations, including the Community Diagnostic Centre located at Eastfield in Scarborough, as well as the York Community Stadium.
Healthcare officials worked diligently over the weekend to resume full services as soon as it was deemed safe to do so.
A spokesperson for the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provided an initial statement on Friday regarding the phased reopening process.
The spokesperson said:
"We are pleased to confirm that Malton Urgent Treatment Centre has now reopened and patients can attend as normal. Work continues to restore services at the main hospital following this week's fire. While the main hospital remains temporarily closed, our priority is to reopen and resume services as soon as it is safe to do so."
Before the full reopening on Monday, the Trust had provided clear guidance for patients who were due to receive care at the hospital, urging those with scheduled appointments not to turn up unless specifically instructed by healthcare staff.
The spokesperson added:
"If you have an appointment at Malton Hospital, please do not attend unless you have been contacted and advised to do so. Our teams are reviewing all affected appointments and will contact patients directly to rearrange appointments or discuss the next steps."
The fire incident prompted a full evacuation of the premises earlier last week. Emergency services and local partners sprang into action to ensure the safety of both patients and staff during the emergency response.
The hospital highlighted the crucial role played by a nearby educational establishment, which provided a safe haven during the evacuation procedures.
The Trust stated:
"We would like to thank North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, our colleagues, partner organisations and the local community for their continued support, patience and understanding over the past few days. We have been incredibly touched by the kindness shown by local people, whose messages of support and offers of help have meant a great deal to our colleagues. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Malton School, whose swift support during the evacuation was invaluable."
Further updates regarding the restoration of inpatient wards and other specialist services are expected to be shared by healthcare officials as more information becomes available.
Some of the specialist services located on the Malton Hospital site are managed by partner organisations. These include the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, both of which have been actively involved in the ongoing recovery efforts following the blaze.
