Bridlington is set to see significant developments with the approval of a massive new dental practice on Quay Road to tackle the town's 'dental desert' reputation, alongside plans for a new hot food takeaway on Bridge Street.
Bridlington, a town recently dubbed a 'dental desert' due to its limited access to local provision, is set to receive a huge boost to its healthcare services.
Planning approval has been officially granted to East Riding Council's ambitious plan to convert the Crown Community Centre offices, located off Quay Road, into a major new dental practice.
The project will see the creation of seventeen surgeries within the building, with the possibility of some audiology work also being offered to patients.
The intended occupant for the new facility is My Dentist. Transforming the offices into a large-scale dental practice will enable the provider to significantly increase its capacity in the coastal resort.
According to the approved plans, the new site will be able to deliver approximately 1,700 appointments per week.
Crucially for local residents who have struggled to access care, around 840 of these weekly appointments will be allocated to NHS patients.
This represents a massive expansion compared to the 450 mostly private appointments that My Dentist currently delivers in the town.
The approved vision for the transformation of the Crown Building extends beyond just dental care, as it includes turning the area into a 'Live Well Campus'.
Existing uses of the building by voluntary, community, and social enterprises are set to continue alongside the new healthcare provisions.
The transformation is also expected to bring a significant employment boost to the Yorkshire Coast town.
Once the conversion occurs, the building will go from hosting forty-one jobs, which currently includes thirteen full-time roles, to eighty-two jobs, including sixty-two full-time positions.
In a separate planning development for Bridlington, a long-vacant shop unit could soon be getting a new lease of life.
A planning application has been submitted to open a hot food takeaway at 16 Bridge Street.
The premises has stood empty in recent years but has previously been occupied by an Oxfam charity shop and a ladies' fashion store.
If approved, the new takeaway would employ three members of staff, including two full-time workers.
The application form for the Bridge Street site suggests indicative opening hours of 11am to 11pm for the new food outlet.
