Alison Hume, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, has welcomed news that both towns will benefit from increased police patrols this summer as part of a major crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Safer Streets summer initiative, which is scheduled to run until the end of September, will see North Yorkshire Police (NYP) work with key local stakeholders to devise bespoke action plans capable of combating offences such as shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.
These plans include targeted enforcement powers against troublemakers and aim to make town centres become more vibrant, welcoming areas.
Commenting on Safer Streets, Ms Hume said:
“I welcome this initiative, which is going to make a real difference to my constituents in Scarborough and Whitby.
“Local people deserve to enjoy our town centres, which are at the heart of our communities.
“We have the right to feel safe in our towns and enjoy everything they’ve got to offer.
“This initiative sends a clear message to anyone who tries to stop us doing that, because they’re not going to go unpunished.”
Scarborough and Whitby are among 500 towns across the country to sign-up to the Labour initiative.
Safer Streets also contains a component designed to support young people by providing activities for them during the summer holidays.
Ms Hume added:
“We’re putting officers back on the beat where you can see them and making our town centres safe again.
“This summer crack-down is on top of government funding for 32 extra full-time officers and 20 PCSOs for North Yorkshire Police by the end of the year.”
Before Labour came to power, the Crime Survey for England and Wales found that 25 percent of people perceived anti-social behaviour to be a problem in their area.
Shoplifting soared under the previous Conservative government, with a 70 percent rise being reported during their last two years in office.
Violence and abuse against shopworkers stood at over 2,000 incidents a day according to the British Retail Consortium.
Jo Coles, York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, said:
“Persistent crime and anti-social behaviour makes people’s lives a misery.
“The Mayor David Skaith and I are committed to delivering safe places for everyone in our region.
“The Safer Streets summer initiative and North Yorkshire Police’s additional investment in our neighbourhood policing teams are delivering increased visible policing within our communities, helping build community confidence, and ensure people feel safe.”
