Long-Serving Head Zookeeper At Sewerby Hall Attends Royal Garden Party

John Pickering, the head zookeeper at Sewerby Hall and Gardens near Bridlington, has been honoured at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for his four decades of dedication to animal welfare.

John Pickering, the long-serving head zookeeper at Sewerby Hall and Gardens near Bridlington, has attended a prestigious Royal Garden Party in recognition of his outstanding public service.

The dedicated animal expert attended the royal event, which was held at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, the sixth of May.

The invitation marks a celebration of a remarkable career that has spanned more than forty years at the popular East Yorkshire attraction.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council officially nominated Mr Pickering for the royal honour as a mark of appreciation for his long-standing dedication to animal welfare, conservation, and community engagement.

The local authority stated that the zookeeper’s attendance at this prestigious event reflects both his exceptional contribution to the region and the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and the public.

Having first joined Sewerby Hall and Gardens as a seventeen-year-old in 1979, the head zookeeper has played a pivotal role in maintaining exemplary standards of animal care.

Over the decades, his diligent work has ensured the zoo consistently operates in strict line with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs requirements.

Throughout his extensive career near Bridlington, he has provided a crucial safe haven for animals that have been surrendered by private owners and collectors, ensuring their continued wellbeing in a professional environment.

Mr Pickering's hands-on approach to animal care has seen him personally hand-rear three Humboldt penguins, affectionately named Pickle, Toby, and Webster, stepping in when their parents were unable to care for them.

He also famously cared for Rosie, a beloved bird who was widely believed to be the oldest Humboldt penguin in the world, and successfully hand-reared a baby monkey during his tenure.

As a dedicated mentor within the zoological community, the head zookeeper has supported and trained countless keepers and apprentices, passing on his wealth of knowledge to the next generation of animal carers.

He has continuously enhanced the visitor experience at the zoo by developing interactive keeper talks, feeding sessions, and animal encounters that have helped to educate and inspire the visiting public.

Mr Pickering also played a key role in managing the attraction's response to significant national crises, including the recent Avian Influenza outbreak and the global COVID-19 pandemic.

His leadership during these extremely challenging times helped to actively safeguard the welfare of the animals, the staff, and the visitors to the estate.

His deep commitment to sustainability has also been evident through various practical initiatives implemented across the zoo grounds.

These environmentally friendly projects include reusing estate branches, repurposing fallen trees into bark mulch, and upcycling various materials for enclosure improvements.

In recognition of his steadfast service, Mr Pickering has previously been awarded the council’s Long Service Award, further highlighting a career defined by dedication, integrity, and professionalism.

Councillor Nick Coultish, the cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, praised the zookeeper's enduring impact.

Councillor Nick Coultish said:

"We are delighted that John was invited to attend the Royal Garden Party in recognition of his remarkable service. His dedication over more than four decades has made a lasting impact on Sewerby Hall, Gardens and Zoo, along with the wider community. This honour is greatly deserved."

The honoured head zookeeper expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his life's work with rescued animals.

John Pickering added:

"I feel so honoured that my employers had nominated me to go to the garden party. I do my best for the animals and try and make their lives better, we rescue a lot of animals here so I like to think we are doing a lot of good work."

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has extended its formal congratulations to the zookeeper on this significant achievement and publicly thanked him for his continued commitment to excellence in public service.
