Assaults on emergency service staff in North Yorkshire have taken on a new menace during lockdown.
A Scarborough man was jailed earlier in the month after claiming to have COVID and then spitting at a police officer.
Superintendent Mike Walker says the man's 22 week jail sentence should act as a stern warning.
Nationwide there has been an increase in assaults on emergency workers during the pandemic.
Superintendent Walker says this sort of assault on emergency workers is deeply concerning and wont be tolerated.
Superintendent Walker added:
“It is never acceptable to assume that assaults upon police officers and staff should be tolerated, they are not simply ‘part of the job’.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the overwhelming majority of you who continue to support all of the emergency services during these unprecedented times.”
