Seven aspiring young actors from Scarborough, Bridlington, Eastfield, and Malton have been selected to perform in a professional production of Calendar Girls the Musical this summer.
Seven young actors from the Scarborough area, Bridlington, Eastfield, and Malton are set to gain invaluable professional theatre experience after joining the cast of Calendar Girls the Musical.
The production will run at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough this summer, offering the teenagers a chance to work on a major professional stage.
The performers, who are all aged between sixteen and nineteen, include current Stephen Joseph Theatre Young Company members Robyn Chambers and Jack Pickering, alongside Youth Theatre member Arabella Carey, who are all from Scarborough.
They are joined by Young Company member Will Ireland from Bridlington, Keane Liley and Charlie Wright from Eastfield, and former Young Company member Annie Dunbar from Malton.
Between them, the seven teenagers will share the roles of Danny, Jenny, and Tommo, who are the teenage children of three of the Calendar Girls.
To manage the demanding performance schedule, the young actors will appear in the show during its Scarborough run from the 27th of June to the 25th of July in two alternating teams. Each team will take to the stage for several consecutive shows in a row.
The young cast members are being guided by Community Cast Director Chantell Walker, who is a former Associate Director at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
Chantell Walker said:
"They are all aspiring actors, some planning on heading to drama school, so being part of a professional production is an invaluable experience for them. These are brilliant roles and really bring a fun and authentic feel to the show, so it was important that we cast these young actors carefully. I’m so looking forward to working with these young actors. They’re all either from Scarborough or very local. It’s important that the SJT is connecting to the town’s young people and supporting them on their journey as aspiring actors."
The much-loved musical was created by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth.
It follows the heartwarming story of a group of Yorkshire women who decide to create a fabulous fundraising calendar following the death of one of their husbands.
The musical is based on the original play Calendar Girls, written by Tim Firth, and the motion picture of the same name, which was penned by Tim Firth and Juliette Towhidi.
The production is being directed by the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Paul Robinson.
Paul Robinson said:
"I am absolutely thrilled to see local young talent joining the cast of Calendar Girls the Musical. Their energy is the perfect counterpoint to this heartwarming story, bringing a fresh, vibrant, and authentic Yorkshire grit that makes the whole production sing. It’s a wonderful blending of generations that truly captures the themes of the show and the spirit of community!"
After opening in Scarborough, the show will travel to other venues as part of a wider co-production.
The Stephen Joseph Theatre has partnered with Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake, the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, and the Octagon Theatre Bolton.
Each of the partner theatres will provide their own cast of local young actors for their respective runs, ensuring the production maintains its local community connections at every venue.
Calendar Girls the Musical was originally produced by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers alongside The Shubert Organisation.
The current production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd.
