The Yorkshire Coast is to get its own DAB Radio network.
OFCOM has announced that East Coast Digital Radio Limited, a sister company of This is the Coast, has been awarded the small-scale radio multiplex licence for Yorkshire Coast.
The company will now be able to build a network of three DAB radio transmitters to serve Bridlington, Scarborough, Filey and Whitby.
The DAB multiplex will be able to transmit up to 20 radio stations which will enable a range of new DAB services to be launched in the area including a number of new formats. It will also enable some of the area's existing local and community stations to make the transition to digital radio if they so wish.
The transmitter network will be built over the next 9 to 18 months with the exact line up of new services being confirmed during that period.
This is the Coast has already confirmed that it will be broadcasting on the new platform extending its existing DAB service into Whitby and Bridlington, it has also committed to adding the “This is the Coast Extra” service to the platform which will give greater access to the news and sport service which is currently available online.
In it’s application to operate the Yorkshire Coast Mutliplex, East Coast Digital Radio said:
“The Yorkshire Coast has a strong sense of local identity and community. We aim to provide a digital platform to enable those community links to be maintained, celebrated, and developed through local broadcasting.
We aim to serve the main population centres of Whitby, Scarborough, Eastborough, Filey and Bridlington along with the villages in-between. The service will aim to cover villages on the A64 corridor as far inland as Sherburn and on the A170 corridor as far as Pickering.
Our aim is for the Yorkshire Coast DAB platform to provide a future proof platform for local broadcasting for these coastal communities.”
OFCOM is currently rolling out small scale DAB licences across the country. Small-scale DAB is described as:
“an innovative technology which provides a low-cost route for local commercial, community and specialist music services to broadcast on terrestrial digital radio to a relatively small geographical area.”
