Life Size Sand Art Red Arrows Just the Start of Scarborough's Armed Forces Community Arts

Yorkshire Coast youngsters have been working on their own scale models of the RAF Red Arrows for a series of parades next week.

A sand art visualisation of the Red Arrows that appeared on Scarborough's South Bay beach at the weekend was created in actual size.

The real Red Arrows will be performing at the National Armed Forces Day Event in the town a week on Saturday.

Lee Threadgold, from Animated Objects Theatre Company, says they have been working on scale models of the Red Arrows for use in next week's children's parades, but couldn't resist creating a full size image of the jets in the sand.

Ahead of the main Armed Forces Day event on Saturday 25th June, there are a number of warm up events taking place next week and as Lee Threadgold explains, a number of community created art works will be appearing in the town over the next few days.

Hundreds of children from local schools have been involved in making art pieces for use in a series of children's parades next week. The parades will be representing the history of the different armed forces over the span of hundreds of years - including plenty of parade pieces specific to our region.

Lee says there will be parades in Whitby, Filey and Scarborough

The parades are scheduled to take place as follows:

  • Whitby - Monday 20th June starting at 9.45am in Pannett Park and heading down through town to Dock End for the Flag Raising ceremony just after 10.00am. In the parade there will be models of army patrol vehicles inspired by the Yorkshire Regiment; dazzle warships; and a special series of pieces in remembrance of the First World War.
  • Filey - Tuesday 21st June starting on the beach at approx. 1.30pm - the best viewing position is on the promenade above! You'll see a small fleet of historic tall ships inspired by the likes of HMS Tricomalee at the Royal Navy Museum in Hartlepool; army vehicles and Royal Air Force biplanes.
  • Scarborough - Thursday 23rd June on South Bay beach heading from West Pier to the Spa from 10.00am - best viewing points on the pavement or beach along the route heading south.  Look out for pieces inspired by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight; army medical vehicles; Dunkirk small boats; the 'Remember Scarborough' tram and a War Horse.

And at each town you'll also see the young people's version of the RAF Red Arrows team leading the parade.

In addition to the parade events, there has been sand art especially for the National event, there will be a large scale sculpture trail around Scarborough on Saturday 25th June .

There will also be a series of short films available to view online on the Scarborough Armed Forces Day website, and a special soundscape that you can listen to on your mobile device using the free Echoes interactive walks app.

Lee says:

"None of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts of members of our communities across the borough getting involved as makers; taking part in filming and recording; and participating in live events. Hundreds of people have taken part in creating these unique artworks and we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has shown their support so far."

The community outreach programme has been led by Animated Objects, commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council as part of the Armed Forces Day National Event.
