Families in Scarborough, Whitby, and Pickering can protect their children against the flu this autumn without needing an appointment at new NHS drop-in clinics.
Free flu vaccinations will be available to school-aged children at drop-in clinics across Scarborough, Whitby, and Pickering this autumn.
Families can access the fast and simple immunisations without an appointment as an NHS roadshow arrives in local community venues. The 'Be Winter Wise' pop-up events will allow parents and carers to protect their children before seasonal viruses reach their peak.
Eligible adults will also be able to receive free flu vaccines at some of the pop-up sessions. Healthcare professionals will be on hand at each event to help residents manage their general wellbeing and offer advice on staying healthy through the colder months.
The roadshow will visit the Market Hall in Scarborough on Friday the 30th of October between 10am and 2pm. It will then move to The Coliseum in Whitby on Wednesday the 18th of November from 11am until 3pm, before heading to Pickering Library on Thursday the 19th of November between 10am and 3pm.
Around one hundred thousand hospital admissions were prevented by last year's flu vaccination programme, according to data from the UK Health Security Agency. Health officials say the jabs also saved approximately seven thousand lives.
Medical Director at the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, Dr Nigel Wells, said:
"Colder weather brings a sharp rise in seasonal bugs and places significant pressure on both families and local NHS services. By bringing these clinics directly into communities across the region, we are making health advice easier to reach.
Flu can circulate quickly and poses serious health risks, particularly to older adults, pregnant women, very young children, and those living with long-term medical conditions.
Getting vaccinated remains the single most effective way to protect yourself and those around you. I encourage everyone eligible to drop into one of our sessions, speak to our teams and get protected."
Alongside attending the community clinics, health teams are urging residents to take simple steps at home to stay well this winter. Keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet and seeking help early for minor illnesses can stop them from getting worse.
Local pharmacies, GP surgeries, and the NHS 111 service can provide treatment and advice before a problem becomes serious, while life-threatening emergencies should always be directed to 999. Details of all the upcoming roadshow events are available on the Let’s Get Better website.
