Langdale Moorland Fire- Council Director on Road Closures

Firefighters are continuing to battle the Langdale Moor fire near RAF Fylingdales, with road closures still in place.

While they say the blaze has been contained, there is still thick smoke in the area.

Karl Battersby is a gold level officer for North Yorkshire Council, and involved in the multi-agency response.

He has this advice for the public:

"We've been putting in place a number of road closures to make sure that the public are safe and don't get near to this incident, but primarily as well to make sure the fire service can deal with the incident most effectively. We really recognize that particularly the A 171 is a strategic link of real in regional importance, and the fact that we've had to close that road has caused disruption for many businesses in the communities, and we can only apologise for that.

"But ultimately public safety has to be our number one priority. We have a list of all the road closures that we've put in place on the council's website as well as general information. So we'd ask the public to to look there before they decide to make any journeys, and we'd also ask them really to try and stay outside of the area to keep themselves safe."

Karl added that people need to respect closures and diversions:

"So I would ask you please respect the fact that we've closed the road, we've done it for a reason, and whilst it will cause you disruption, difficulty in having to find an alternative route, we're doing so for your safety up to date information in terms of public messaging, road closures is available on the Council's website and we direct members of the public to look at that information and we remain ready and committed to do whatever we can to make sure that we bring this incident to a successful conclusion as quickly as we can."
