Local rescue teams have used a GPS device to help them rescue a dog which had fallen over the cliffs in Sewerby.
Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team, in collaboration with the Filey Coastguard Rescue Team, responded to a distress call regarding a dog that had fallen over the cliffs near Sewerby this week.
The dog, named Bramble, was reported to be in a precarious situation after tumbling over the cliff edge. Thanks to a GPS tracker on her collar, rescuers were able to quickly locate her position, which proved crucial given the challenging terrain.
Edge safety officers first attempted to conduct a search from the cliff top but were unable to spot Bramble due to the difficult landscape. Consequently, a search at the base of the cliffs was initiated, where Bramble was ultimately found injured and trapped in a hole.
Rescue teams worked diligently to lift Bramble into an animal rescue bag, ensuring her safety before transporting her to a local veterinary practice for urgent care. As of now, Bramble remains in serious condition.
The incident has prompted a safety reminder from the Coastguard. They emphasized the dangers of cliff edges for both dogs and their owners, urging pet owners to keep their dogs on a lead at all times when near cliffs. “Even the most obedient dogs can be startled or misjudge the edge,” a spokesperson from the rescue team noted. Alarmingly, several other dogs were spotted off lead near the cliff edge during the rescue operation.
In the event of an emergency along the coast or cliffs, the Coastguard advises the public to dial 999 and request assistance.
This incident serves as a critical reminder of the inherent dangers present in coastal areas, especially for pet owners who enjoy the scenic views along the Yorkshire Coast.
