Free Baby Boxes Will Support New Parents In Scarborough Under New Scheme

Parents in Scarborough will receive free baby boxes filled with essential items and developmental toys as part of a new pilot scheme to support early childhood development.

Free baby boxes filled with developmental toys, books, and essential items will soon be delivered to new parents across the Scarborough area.

A twelve-month pilot scheme will provide the bundles to help families access local services, reduce economic constraints, and support healthy child development. The initiative is based on a flagship programme that has run in Finland for over eighty years.

Each box will contain practical items such as thermometers, alongside information booklets offering guidance on safe sleep, weaning, and reading.

Scarborough was selected for the pilot following outreach in Eastfield and Seamer, which highlighted ongoing concerns around early language and child development, alongside high levels of vulnerability linked to social and economic factors.

Referrals for the boxes will be taken by health visitors during antenatal visits, aiming to establish early relationships between parents and key public services. Officials hope that by engaging families sooner, they will continue to utilise available support once their baby is born.

Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, said:

"We know far too many young people in York and North Yorkshire find those find those first few days, weeks and years their lives can be incredibly difficult, and the first tranche of this fund will go to comprise of two schemes, the baby box in Scarborough and a pilot of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Selby, both areas with high proportion of deprivation and childhood poverty in our region."

He added:

"The baby box in particular is a tried and tested program which has had huge positive impacts since its inception, particularly in Scotland where parents reported their baby box, saved them money on essentials when otherwise they would not have been able to afford those.

We've chosen to undertake the pilot in Scarborough in recognition of the highest levels of child poverty in the town and will closely monitor the impact it has on the outcomes of newborn babies in the area."

The Scarborough and Whitby constituency area will benefit from the scheme, which will cost around one hundred and sixty-five thousand pounds for the boxes and associated staffing.

Partnering with the Children's Foundation, the project aims to replicate successful outcomes seen in the Northeast of England. Surveys from that region showed that over ninety-five per cent of parents felt the boxes saved them money, supported their baby's development, and made them feel more prepared for parenthood.

Director of Economy, Andy Kerr, said:

"The baby box pilot will focus on Scarborough and its aims to reduce inequalities and support child development.

The scheme includes developmental toys, books, and parent information, which will focus on early bonding for children and parents.

These projects are designed to improve literacy, social mobility, and parental confidence.

These are very much pilot schemes, which we hope will provide an evidence base, which will allow us to scale at a regional level by using a seed funding to attract corporate sponsorship to enable us to make this a long-term financially sustainable initiative."

The initiative is part of a wider four hundred thousand pound Cradle to Career Fund approved by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. The fund aims to support young people from their earliest years through to employment, covering primary, secondary, and post-sixteen education.

There is currently no similar free provision in the county. Officials are working closely with the 'Best Start in Life' team at North Yorkshire Council to ensure the new initiative enhances existing support rather than duplicating it.

North Yorkshire Council's leader, Councillor Carl Les, said:

"This new funding is extremely welcome as it will help to give children and young people in North Yorkshire the best possible start to their lives.

Both of the pilot projects are aimed at doing just that, improving literacy for children from an early age and giving parents and carers vital information and access to local services.

We are committed to working within the combined authority to make sure that all of our children and young people can get the support they need, helping them to fulfil their full potential throughout childhood and as they then embark on their careers."

The boxes in Scarborough will contain a mix of developmental toys and books, practical items such as thermometers, and information booklets for parents and carers on topics such as reading, safe sleep, and weaning.

The scheme is based on the flagship scheme in Finland, where the baby box has been a universal benefit since 1949 and is given to all expectant mothers provided they attend antenatal care.​
