Formal Consultation Launched on Changes to Brompton Hall School Near Scarborough

Residential provision would go, the school would change from single sex to co-educational provision, and more day places would be created.

Plans to open up Brompton Hall School near Scarborough to girls are now in a second phase of consultation.

The school currently offers education and residential places to boys aged eight to 16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs needs.

It's proposed to phase out the residential places while making the daytime places co-educational and increasing the number of daytime places at the school.

County Councillor Annabel Wilkinson says people responding to a survey earlier in the year were in favour of admitting girls.

The county council is looking to broaden the intake of Brompton Hall School, so it can offer more places to pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH) and offer places to girls. But it would mean the school losing it's existing residential facilities.

County Councillor Annabel Wilkinson says the changes are needed.

In a survey earlier in the year only 24% of respondents agreed that the the residential places should be phased out, but 65% agreed that girls should be admitted to the school.

The county council is now going to consult on increasing places at Brompton Hall School and admitting girls, which would involve ceasing residential provision by September 2024.

Jane le Sage, assistant director for inclusion at North Yorkshire County Council, said:

“We have now gone through all the feedback from the initial consultation.

“The feedback we received demonstrated large support for the proposal to increase the number of places at Brompton Hall School for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs and to admit girls.  There is a pressing need to see more provision for young people with these needs in North Yorkshire, especially for girls, a demand that is increasing.

“However, in order to do this, we need to free up physical space and resources at the school to accommodate more teaching and learning space. We also need to make sure the school remains financially viable. As a result, we will be consulting on a proposal to end residential provision by September 2024.

“We will work closely with families of pupils already attending the school. The vast majority of pupils attending the school at the start of this review will transition through school naturally, unaffected by any proposed changes.  We will closely support all pupils to make sure their assessed needs continue to be met.”

The Statutory consultation is now open with the closing date for responses being September 8th 2022.

There will be public meetings taking place on July 5th and 14th.
