Seaside shops on the Yorkshire Coast are being asked not to sell flying ring toys.
The rings can end up in the sea and cause horrific injury's to seals and other sea creatures.
East Riding Councillor Jayne Phoenix is calling for local retailers to sell solid Frisbee's instead.
The call comes as part of a campaign to reduce the number of seal injuries caused by the plastic rings.
East Riding Councillor - Jayne Phoenix - says the rings cause horrific injuries to the seals.
Councillor Linda Johnson says the solid Frisbee discs are a much safer alternative.
Councillor Phoenix proposed a motion to East riding Council that stated:
"This Council: Notes with concern the instances of seals sustaining death and serious injury through strangulation caused by plastic flying rings left on beaches after people have been playing with them.
This council further notes that many major retailers including coastal branches of Asda, Tesco and Pets at Home have removed these items from their stores.
This council resolves to ask our communications and media team to raise awareness with the public of the harm that these objects cause to sea creatures and to encourage independent retailers to follow the example of the major supermarket chains and not stock them"
The motion received the backing of the council members.
