Scarborough To Host 12-Minute Drone Display Following Goldwing Light Parade

A bespoke aerial drone show will illuminate Scarborough's South Bay this Saturday, replacing the cancelled fireworks for the Goldwing Light Parade.

A bespoke twelve-minute drone display will light up the night sky over Scarborough this Saturday.

Spectators will see locally themed illuminated designs hovering over the South Bay, which could include a Goldwing motorbike, lighthouse, an ice cream, and a seagull. The sequence will also feature tributes to Scarborough 400 and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, concluding with a thank you message to the South Bay Traders Association.

Organisers secured the aerial light show to complement the Goldwing Light Parade on September 12th. The drones replace the traditional fireworks, which authorities cancelled last month following government heat warnings.

Scarborough Mayor Thomas Murray said he was delighted that Scarborough Town Council could get involved:

When I was contacted by the South Bay Trade Association to help out with their drone display, the answer was yes. Sadly the firework  display was put on hold and, and I think the idea of a drone display to replace that was a brilliant idea, and the town council is ecstatic to be able to support.

Drones are due to launch from the outer end of the East Pier.

The optimal viewing area will stretch along Sandside, specifically between the Harbour Bar and Luna Park. Visitors standing on Foreshore Road will also be able to see the aerial formations.

The display will commence at approximately 9:15 PM, following the completion of the Goldwing parade. The exact start time remains slightly flexible, with a buffer until 9:30 PM to accommodate the motorcycles and potential weather issues, as drone displays are weather-dependent.

Councillor Murray touched on the fact that not everyone likes fireworks:

Not everyone likes fireworks, and it's quite an urban area, Scarborough. We know dogs and cats don't particularly like the noise so drones are definitely more pet-friendly. But yes, the idea of the drone display and all the local landmarks that could be featured in that will be brilliant.

A synchronized soundtrack will accompany the visuals. Drone operating company Star Symphonies will provide a blended mix of tracks, which will broadcast along the harbourside, to match the display.

The Mayor said this is exactly the kind of event Scarborough Town Council wants to be supporting:

This is just the kind of thing that Scarborough Town Council, still relatively new, wants to be getting involved with, wants to be supporting and showing the community we're here to help make stuff like this happen for the town. The drone display or any other events in Scarborough that needs that little bit of an extra push, that little bit of advertisement and participation from us, whether it's by my attendance or a bit of extra funding to make things happen, just like this drone display.

The drone display has been made possible through South Bay Traders, with backing from North Yorkshire Council, Visit North Yorkshire, The Anchor Fish & Chips and Scarborough Town Council.

The Goldwing Light Parade begins from West Pier at 8:00pm, with the Goldwings on West Pier during the afternoon.

THIS IS THE COAST will be hosting the event from near the lifeboat station, with entertainment beginning at 6:00pm.
