The International Day of the Older Person is being marked with a special event in Filey today.
Age UK are holding a drop in event in the town with an aim of getting the area's over 50's involved in more community activities.
Tracey Armstrong is organising the event.
International Day of the Older Person, which was started in 1990 by the United Nations, will be celebrated with the free event on October 1st from 12 pm to 3 pm.
This year marks the third year that Age UK has celebrated the day, but it is the culmination of a year's worth of planning to expand the event.
The event aims to bring together over 50s in the Filey area to "get back out, find things that they want to do and get them back out socialising and and not sat at home isolated," says Tracy Armstrong, a project worker for Age UK. Armstrong, who runs a befriending project connecting volunteers with isolated older people, will be at the event along with representatives from 18 local agencies and activity groups.
Groups taking part in the event include:
- Filey Library
- Filey Lions Club
- U3A
- Filey Surgery
- Carers Plus
- The Fire Brigade
Armstrong believes that Filey's strong community spirit makes it the perfect place for such an event. She commented that "everybody knows everybody" in Filey, making it a "lovely little town". The event provides a valuable opportunity for both service providers and older people to connect and build relationships.
