East Riding Council Launches New Website For £100,000 Electric Vehicle Charger Project

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has launched a new consultation website to gather residents' views on where public electric vehicle charging points should be installed as part of a £100,000 investment.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has launched a new consultation website to capture the views and suggestions of local residents regarding the installation of electric vehicle charging points.

The local authority is investing £100,000 in a scheme to roll out more public electric vehicle charging points at sites across the East Riding to assist drivers of electric cars both now and in the future.

According to the council, the primary aim of the project is to expand the number of public charging points that are already installed and to give people a direct say on where they would like new ones to be located.

The council wants to further support local communities by providing more on-street charging points, as well as off-street charging points in council-run car parks, as electric vehicles become increasingly popular among motorists.

This £100,000 project is designed to prepare the council for the forthcoming Government-funded Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure programme. The council states that the programme, which is currently in development, will lead to an even greater rollout of charging points across the area.

The Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure programme will aim to deliver on-street residential charging in areas where there is limited or no available off-street parking. The scheme will focus on all settlement areas, both large and small, with the goal of ensuring equitable coverage across the entirety of the East Riding.

As part of the new scheme, the consultation website has been created to gather views from local residents, businesses, town and parish councils, and other stakeholders about where new charging points are most urgently needed.

Visitors to the website will be asked to rate how urgently they require a charge point in a specific location and provide the reasons why.

The council has outlined that the new website features an interactive map of the East Riding, which people can use to plot their recommendations for new locations. It also includes detailed information about the £100,000 project and the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund.

Furthermore, the platform will provide updates on new phases and projects as they are announced, alongside facts and website links, including a video about the range of electric vehicles currently available.

The results of the consultation will be used by the council to prioritise the installation of chargers where they are needed the most.

The local authority has confirmed that all locations suggested by the public will be subject to feasibility checks. These checks will consider overall cost, consultation requirements, power grid capacity, and the need to ensure a fair and equitable distribution across the authority.

The feedback gathered will also be used to shape how the council will utilise potential funding across the East Riding to best support local motorists. Any recommended locations that are not chosen as part of this initial project will be taken forward as potential sites for any forthcoming schemes.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said:

"With the launch of this website we want to capture our residents’ opinions on where they would like to see public EV charging points and where are they needed most.

"As we expand our infrastructure to prepare for more electric vehicles on our roads, we want to hear from people who might not have access to their own charging points and may rely on public chargers, or where would be the most convenient sites for all motorists to charge up.

"Electric vehicles are our future and we need to prepare for how widespread they will become and promote the benefits of driving them."

To create the new site, the council has joined forces with Commonplace, a web-based consultation platform.

According to the council, Commonplace helps local authorities and government bodies connect with residents in a clear, accessible, and inclusive way.

Residents can participate by visiting the 'Have Your Say Today - East Riding EV' website on the Commonplace platform at https://east-riding-ev.commonplace.is/en-GB/map/suggest-locations-map
