Senior North Yorkshire Councillors have debated the fairness of paying musicians to perform at Scarborough's Peasholm Park bandstand while other performers across the county go unpaid.
The issue of paying performers at Scarborough's Peasholm Park has been debated by senior North Yorkshire Councillors.
Questions have been raised regarding the fairness of financial compensation for musicians playing at the popular Scarborough attraction, particularly when compared to other locations across the county.
The discussion was prompted by concerns from musicians who noticed a disparity in how the local authority funds live performances at different bandstands.
Councillor Andrew Murday highlighted the situation, questioning whether it was equitable that funding is provided exclusively for the Scarborough site and not for other bandstands throughout North Yorkshire:
"I just staked interest that I am a member of various itinerant bands across the county and fellow band members have raised the issue of payment for concerts and they brought to my attention the fact that the council pays musicians to play on the bandstand at Peasholm Bandstand in Scarborough, but doesn't pay for any of the other musicians to play on any of the other bandstands through North Yorkshire. And of course, I support paying for bands to play on these these sites. But my question is, does Councillor Myers think it's fair that the council only provides such funding in Scarborough and nowhere else in the county?"
In response to the concerns regarding the funding differences across North Yorkshire, an explanation was provided for the specific financial arrangements at Peasholm Park.
It was noted that the Scarborough park features a variety of paid attractions, and the musical performances are considered an integral part of that broader commercial offering.
Councillor Simon Myers explained the reasoning behind the payments made to bands performing at the Scarborough venue, noting that the situation differs from most other locations across the county:
"In terms of Peasholm Park, the reason for that is- that does strangely sit with me- but there is a large council offering, Peasholm Park, a lot of paying attractions and so the band is part of the offer for that, which is different to most of the other situations across North Yorkshire. But I'm sure, Councillor [Malcolm] Taylor can take up the point more generally, but that's why we pay a modest sum for bands in Peasholm Park."
