Council Leaders Says East Yorkshire Businesses Backing Devolution

Moves to create an elected Mayor for East Yorkshire and Hull are being well supported by local business according to the leader of East Riding Council.

The new mayor would receive devolved powers and funding from Westminster.

Councillor Anne Handley says the feedback from local firms has been positive.

East Riding Council leaders met with Government Ministers last to discuss a proposed devolution deal. The devolution plan would see the creation of a combined mayoral authority for the East Riding and Hull, while both councils would continue to run independently a new elected Mayor would receive devolved powers and funding from Westminster to oversee a range of policy areas across both geographic areas.

Council leaders say they've also bee consulting with business leaders and have had positive feedback from business on the devolution plans.

East Yorkshire Cabinet member Leo Hammond says firms can see a number of benefits.

Leaders of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council say that there will be further consultation before any agreement is made between East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull in relation to devolution.

A proposed devolution timetable was outlined in a recent  report to Hull City Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee which suggested that Hull and the East Riding would review the proposed deal in December and January.

The results of that review would be published in January and a consultation would take place from then until February.

Responses to the consultation would be looked at in April and May and the implications for the proposed deal would be considered.

Final approval to send it to Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove would be sought in June.

If the secretary of state signs it off a the Hull and East Riding Combined Authority would be established and powers would be devolved between January and April 2025.
