A new tap-on, tap-off payment system is being introduced on East Yorkshire Buses following a funding grant from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
A new and more convenient method of paying for bus fares has been introduced across the East Riding, supported by funding from the local council.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has awarded a grant to East Yorkshire Buses to help cover the costs of implementing a new payment system. The technology allows passengers to tap on and tap off using their contactless bank cards or smartphones, eliminating the need to purchase a paper ticket directly from the driver.
The financial support provided by the council was made possible through funding from the UK Government. This investment was delivered as part of the Department for Transport's Bus Service Improvement Plan programme, which aims to enhance public transport networks.
East Yorkshire Buses has now successfully installed the tap-on, tap-off technology across its entire fleet of vehicles. The scheme officially launched to the public on Sunday the 12th of July.
Under the new system, passengers can simply tap their contactless bank card, smartphone, or smartwatch against the driver's ticket machine when they board the bus. When they reach their destination and are ready to leave, they simply tap off against a dedicated reader fitted near the vehicle's exit door.
The updated process means there is no longer any need for passengers to tell the driver where they are travelling to or what specific type of ticket they wish to buy.
Instead, the smart system automatically calculates the best value fare for the journey being made. This applies whether the passenger is making a single trip or undertaking several bus journeys on the same day, ensuring they are always charged the most cost-effective price.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and Planning, Councillor Nick Coultish, said:
"I'm extremely pleased our funding has gone towards something that will really benefit local bus passengers by making paying for journeys easier and quicker.
"The Tap On, Tap Off system is already running successfully on public transport in other parts of the UK, including in London, so I'm really glad it's coming to the East Riding."
Commercial Director at East Yorkshire Buses, Stuart Fillingham, said:
"The launch of Tap On, Tap Off marks another significant step forward in making bus travel even simpler and more convenient for our customers.
"By automatically calculating the best value fare each day, customers can travel with confidence, knowing they'll never pay more than they need to.
"We'd like to thank the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for their financial support in helping make this technology possible.
"Their investment demonstrates a real commitment to improving public transport across the region, and we're delighted to be working in partnership to deliver smarter, easier and more attractive bus travel for our communities."
