The East Riding of Yorkshire Council's cabinet has voted to approve a new Climate Change Strategy.
The strategy will shape the council's approach to climate change for the next 8 years.
It includes a commitment that climate change effect will be taken into account in al the councils' policies and strategies.
Councillor Victoria Aitken says the policy is massively important.
East Riding Council declared a climate emergency in February 2021 following the recommendations of a cross-party Climate Change Review Panel. A further recommendation was to develop a Climate Change Strategy which sets out the authority’s ambitions on climate, including to reach
net zero carbon for the council's own services and operations by 2050.
The new Climate Change Strategy establishes the overarching vision and priorities for reducing emissions and building climate resilience in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It details the Council’s response to climate change, building on the suite of plans and policies already in place across the
authority and the wider region.
At the core of the Strategy is the message that although the Council is only responsible for approximately 1% of the emissions in the area, the authority should use its influence and leadership to drive climate action across the wider East Riding of Yorkshire.
Helen Jenkins-Knight is the council's Climate Change Manager, Helen says working with partners is going to be key in order to make a significant difference.
Council Leader - Councillor Jonathon Owen - has defended the length of time it's taken the authority to come up with the plan, he beleives the strategy is much more robust for having been carefully planned.
