A rail company has applied for permission to install dozens of security cameras at Scarborough station.
More than 40 CCTV cameras are set to be installed at the historic Grade-II listed Scarborough Station if permission is granted by the council.
Rail operator TransPennine Express (TPE) said its listed building application aims to “increase passengers’ sense of security when travelling by train”.
Current cameras at the station were installed more than 15 years ago and as part of the scheme TPE said it would “make good legacy damage” from previous works.
The 41 cameras would be of a contemporary design and use state-of-the-art technology for a “reduced impact on the heritage of Scarborough Railway Station, both visually and by the removal of redundant supporting infrastructure”.
It said that additional benefits include lower operational and maintenance costs.
“The applicant is keen to respect the special architectural and historic interest of Scarborough Railway Station and enhance its preservation status. Similar enhancements are being implemented across the TransPennine Express network,” said the agent for the scheme.
TPE leases Scarborough Railway Station from Network Rail, which owns the freehold, and the rail operator said it was “committed to enhancing the sense of safety and security of all those using or meeting trains on the TransPennine Express Franchise network”.
At a meeting of Scarborough Town Council’s community and place committee on Wednesday, February 25, members said they had no objections to the proposal.
North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application which is open to representations from members of the public.
