A Hunmanby based Councillor has called on the developer behind plans to redevelop the existing sports hall and leisure centre on the Hunmanby Hall site to consult with local residents.
It follows the decision to withdraw the original planning application to to build 14 holiday lets on the site following strong objections from local residents and North Yorkshire’s Conservation Officer.
Commenting on the withdrawal, Councillor Michelle Donohue-Moncrieff who represents Hunmanby on North Yorkshire Council said,
“The Hunmanby Hall site is particularly sensitive as it is steeped in history dating back more than 1000 years.
The is a site that belongs to everyone in Hunmanby and the developers have shown by their approach that they clearly don’t appreciate or care about it.
I have spoken to so many residents who are deeply concerned that a piece of our history is being torn away from the village and that they have not been provided any opportunity by the developer to discuss the plans.”
The planning application has prompted significant debate in Hunmanby over the future of the site which was used as a gym and leisure site for many years after the Hunmanby Hall Girls school closed.
The planning application referred to the proposed development as phase 1 which has led to speculation as to what is intended for the rest of the Hunmanby Hall site which currently has a 9 Hole Golf Course and a mature wooden area which is protected by a Tree Preservation Order.
Councillor Donohue-Moncrieff said,
“It is clear from Conservation Officer’s response that they considered all of the Hunmanby Hall site and not just the redevelopment of the gym and associated buildings.
The community has a right to know what the developer intends to do with the whole site.
I find it disappointing that representatives of the developers were able to inform the press but can’t be bother to engage with local residents in Hunmanby who are the most affected by these plans."
