Bridlington Ice Trail is back, this weekend, with a festive theme.
A magical trail guides visitors through the heart of the seaside town, with a selection of icy spectacles.
This free event will take place on Saturday, 15 and Sunday, 16 November. The sculptures can be enjoyed from 11am both days and will be taken down at 5.30pm on Saturday and 3.30pm on Sunday.
The ice trail will depict traditional Christmas scenes as well as maritime wonders, reflecting Bridlington’s rich coastal heritage.
There will be live ice carving in which a sculptor will craft an impressive Yuletide masterpiece from an enormous block of ice. The fascinating glacial art carving will take place over both days, beginning around 12 noon and taking two to three hours to complete.
Fire and ice shows will take place twice a day on both days and will feature ice sculpting using chainsaws and power tools, synchronised with a pyrotechnic display set to music.
East Riding Council's Project Coordinator for Regeneration and Funding is Fiona Turner.
She explains why you should give the trail a try:
" It's a free event for families. It's it's been part-funded by local businesses and part funded by the UK government, through the shared prosperity [fund]. So there's no cost to anybody for any of it. And we've got 15 ice sculptures to look at. There's some of them that you can sit on, some you can sit in, some that are good to have your photograph taken with, so they're dotted out around town. We've got an interactive carving wall so people can have a go themselves at chipping the ice out."
Fiona adds there's plenty to occupy eager minds too:
"We've got fire and ice shows, so there's somebody actually carving a sculpture while you watch to music and fire as well. And then there's a live carving going on throughout the day where somebody actually is physically chipping away to create an ice sculpture while people are watching.
"If people are driving in, I'd recommend parking in the park and ride. It's free to park there. And then they can get the land train if they want to do. There is a cost for the land train or they can walk into town, which is just short of a mile to get to the first sculpture."
Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said:
“We are delighted to have secured funding from the UK Government to bring this charming event back to Bridlington for another exciting year.
“The ice displays are certain to be real crowd pleasers, drawing on a festive theme and shedding light on the coastal town, rich with culture and history.’’
Families will also be able to make the most of Santa’s Grotto on Saturday, 15 November, meeting Santa on his sleigh.
Throughout the weekend the Bridlington Christmas Food Festival will also be taking place on King Street.
This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and local businesses through the sponsorship of sculptures.
