The road is closed west of Malton near Welburn and is likely to remain closed for some time.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said they were called out at 3:39am:
Crews from Malton responded to a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision in which the car collided with a tree. Crews assisted ambulance crews and made the vehicle safe and before providing lighting to assist police. The incident was left in the hands of the police.
North Yorkshire Police shared more information:
Due to a serious road traffic collision a section of the A64 Malton Bypass, near to Welburn village, has been closed in both directions. This is the section where the dual carriageway turns into a single carriageway (What 3 words Mainly.Resides.Essays). Diversions are being put in place and we request that motorists please avoid travelling on this route. The road is likely to remain closed for some time.

National Highways Yorkshire say that police are diverting traffic around local roads and to allow extra time for journeys.
