Yesterday, North Yorkshire Police were reporting that drivers were ignoring, and in some cases, removing road closure signs.

North Yorkshire Council stepped in to help:

In a number of locations, our highways team is helping the police by using larger highways vehicles to stop people from driving through the closures. Please plan your journey taking these closures into account. Thank you for doing your bit to allow the emergency services to focus on the fire and keep everyone safe.

The Arriva X93 bus between Whitby and Scarborough was diverting via the A169 and the A170 whilst the X94 was serving Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay.

Yesterday, dramatic photos showed the scene near Fylingdales Service Station & Grouse Hill Holiday Park where visitors had packed up and left due to the heavy smoke and proximity of the fire.

Police were manning a number of roadblocks along the road.

There were also reports of an evacuation of the Woodsmith Mine.

Grouse Hill Caravan & Camping Park were asked to evacuate the site and posted this update:

We have been instructed to evacuate Grouse Hill by fire & police. Everyone is now off, by this instruction. Please do not phone to ask my how your caravans are? As we soon may have to evacuate ourselves. We are truly sorry for this course of action but this is out of our control. Please bare with us. Love Caroline, Andrew, William, Amelia and Christine

We have regular updates on air on This Is The Coast this morning and throughout the day. Here's how to listen.

Sarah, a local resident in the Cloughton area, messaged This Is The Coast this morning:

Despite the road closed sign at Burniston saying there’s no access to Whitby, vehicles are still travelling through Burniston and Cloughton to then be turned around by the council at the far end of Cloughton. Living in theses villages means that we have to queue for long periods of time to be able to get back to our homes.

Dave Atkinson from Thorpe Stores in Fylingthorpe also appealed to drivers to not ignore the road closure signs:

Can you let folks know that they can't get through to Scarborough from Robin Hood's Bay / Fylingthorpe. They get directions from Hawsker and sat nav is sending them down here. The road is closed from the top off sledgates Stay safe.

Early on Tuesday morning, we shared this incredible video showing the scale of the blaze:
