Police say the road will be closed for some time.
North Yorkshire police say emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious single vehicle collision on the A169 at Eller Beck Bridge near Goathland, Whitby, just north of RAF Fylingdales.
The serious single vehicle road collision occurred around 11.20pm last night (Wednesday 4 January 2023).
Just before 1am police reported that:
"The road has been closed to allow emergency services to attend the incident and it’s likely that the road will be closed for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes."
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service say crews from Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Malton and Fylingdales responded to
"a report of a single vehicle RTC in which a HGV had left the road leaving one casualty trapped in the vehicle."
They say that Fire crews assisted Ambulance crews in providing first aid care to the casualty adding:
"Crews extricated the male casualty from the vehicle using air bags and hydraulic cutting equipment before handing him into the care of ambulance crews to be transported to hospital."
This morning the Police report that the road may be closed for some time while investigators complete their assessment of scene and to allow specialist recovery of the vehicle, which is a HGV.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Coastliner say that there are alterations to the 840 service as a result of the road closure, they say:
"Due to an accident at Ellerbeck, Coastliner 840 will not be able to reach the following stops:
Dalby Forest Lane End, The Fox & Rabbit Inn, Lockton Lane End, Hole of Horcum, Saltersgate Inn, RAF Fylingdales, Ellerbeck, Goathland, Village Shops, Mallyan Spout Hotel & Lane End.
Alternative stops: Thornton-le-Dale & War Memorial.
This is in place until further notice for all journeys from Malton to Whitby.
We apologise for any inconvenience."
