Man dies after shark attack in Australia

A man has died after being attacked by a shark while fishing off Australia's southwestern coast, police say.

It is the third fatal shark attack in the country in three weeks.

The 35-year-old victim was killed on Saturday morning while spearfishing with his family.

The tragedy happened off Michaelmas Island, a nature reserve on Western Australia's south coast near the town of Albany, about 240 miles from Perth.

He was taken ashore where he was treated by paramedics but died of his injuries.

Police said they were preparing a report for the coroner.

Authorities said a member of the public spotted a 4.5 metre shark of an unknown species near the island that day.

Western Australia premier Roger Cook said he was "deeply saddened to hear of this morning's fatal shark attack".

"This is a tragedy and my thoughts are with the victim's family and friends, as well as the first responders," he added.

On 16 May, a 38-year-old man was fatally attacked by a shark off the coast of Rottnest Island near Perth.

And on 24 May, a 39-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark while fishing on the Great Barrier Reef.

The killings also come after four attacks in New South Wales at the start of the year, one of which resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy.

There are around 20 shark attacks in Australia every year, but the vast majority are not fatal, according to data from conservation groups.
