Train companies in Yorkshire are getting ready for snow and ice predicted to hit the region tonight, Monday 18 November.
Network Rail, which manages the UK's rail infrastructure, says its teams are "on standby" to de-ice key junctions and use special locomotives equipped with snow ploughs if necessary.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Yorkshire and the North East. Network Rail's Operations Director for the North and East route, Karen Duffy, warned passengers that "the snow and ice predicated overnight may mean that some services will be disrupted". She added that engineers are ready to respond to any issues and urged all passengers to check their journeys before travelling this evening.
Train operators Northern and LNER have already adjusted their timetables in anticipation of the bad weather. TransPennine Express (TPE) is allowing passengers with tickets for Monday evening and Tuesday to travel on Wednesday instead if they prefer. TPE is also coordinating with other operators to make travel easier, with tickets valid on Northern services and vice versa until 10am on Tuesday. A similar arrangement is in place for TPE customers travelling between Liverpool and Sheffield, who can use EMR services until 10am on Tuesday.
Tickets purchased for travel from 7pm this evening (Monday 18 November) and all day tomorrow (Tuesday 19 November) will be valid on Wednesday (20 November) if customers wish to delay travelling in the face of freezing temperatures.
In addition, TPE tickets will be valid on Northern services and vice versa until 10am tomorrow, network wide.
Adam Fairclough, Interim Customer Experience and Transformation Director, said:
“We want to keep our customers on the move during cold weather conditions which is why we have teamed up with other operators and given passengers the option to change their plans to travel with us later in the week.
“We urge anyone planning to use our services to check before they travel in case of any disruption.”
Passengers are advised to check the National Rail Enquiries website or their train operator's website before travelling. TPE customers can get updates on the TPE website: https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/travel-updates. LNER has also published travel information: https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/travelling-now/travel-alerts/.
